Level 3 and Level 4 in Sports Massage Therapy
Within this qualification you will learn the skills and knowledge required to plan, provide and evaluate sports massage treatments and to prepare you for a career as a sports massage practitioner working with injured clients. The units it contains cover all the skills and knowledge required for this role.
You will learn to treat individuals suffering from a wide range of conditions, such as muscle fatigue, lumbago/non- specific low back pain, and repetitive strain/overuse, non-acute type injuries
You will also develop your knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology to work on post-acute injury and pre-existing conditions, dealing with musculo-skeletal and para-tendon injuries.
You will develop the skills to conduct subjective and objective assessments, which will cover active, passive and resisted range of movements, detailed postural analysis, functional testing and special tests. You will also develop the skills to work safely and effectively on muscle and para-tendon injuries using a variety of soft tissue techniques and will be able to advise on treatment modalities to support soft tissue repair.
Entry requirements
There is no pre-requisite for this qualification, however, students will be over 16 and have the basic literacy and communication skills necessary for a level 3 qualification. Sports massage therapy can be a physically demanding occupation and candidates should have an appropriate level of physical fitness to embark on the course.
Qualification Units
The L3 qualification comprises of five units:
- Anatomy and physiology for sports massage
- Principals of health and fitness
- Understand the principals of soft tissue dysfunction
- Professional practice in sports massage
- Sports massage treatments
The L4 qualification comprises of three units:
- Conducting subjective and objective assessment
- Provide sports massage techniques to prevent and manage injury
- Treatment modalities to support soft tissue repair
Assessment
In order to pass the course you must complete the following:
- A 70% pass rate in an Anatomy and Physiology exam
- Three observations @ L3: one in a clinical setting, one in an event setting and one in a non clinical setting
- Four assignments
- At L4: Five Practical observations covering a range of assessment methods, new techniques on injured and non-injured clients

Course Format
Face to face course: Tuition will included both online learning content. Face to face learning will be delivered over 8 days
You theory units will be completed via online learning content along with livestream class via ZOOM. (Weekly Monday at 7.30pm for 14 weeks and moving into a monthly ZOOM for your L4 content)
Your practical tuition will all take place in the classroom with reinforcement via videos on the learning platform
